History of Business Enterprise Mapping
In 1989, Don James, founder of Business Enterprise Mapping, was hired to start up a manufacturing facility, where the plant’s main customer required that the firm become ISO 9000 certified before shipping a single unit.
The accepted method for defining quality management systems at that time was to write Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). This was a very difficult project, with short timelines, limited resources and long hours. To save time, Don quickly adopted the flowchart, which allowed him to understand the important aspects of a process before writing the SOP’s. This helped greatly, flowcharts were incorporated as supporting appendices, and the company achieved its goals. Following this experience, Don became determined to find a better way.
In 1993, Don James started Business Enterprise Mapping (BEM). He knew from his own experience that there was a better, faster way to achieve certification while also adding value to an enterprise. After evaluating standard documentation methods, their return on investment, and the effort required to produce them, he knew that BEM’s clients deserved better results than what SOP’s, flowcharts, and swim lane diagrams could deliver.
To this day, our focus continues to be on the development and use of a better process map (and process mapping methodology) to provide more insight, transparency, and improvement that delivers real and lasting client value. Now in our twenty-fifth year, BEM is delivering Revision 16 of The Perigon Method, which is proof of our commitment to continuously seek better ways to transform client organizations by making work flow simpler, faster, and more valuable.

Don founded the company in 1993. Don is the Senior Program Director and also spearheads program development. He has
over 30 years experience working in senior level positions at various companies within Europe and the United States, including VP of Engineering, Director of Operations, Director of Quality Assurance and Director of Advanced Manufacturing Development. Don graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bath University, UK.
- Joe BockerstettePartner
Joe is responsible for business and program development and overall company strategy. He has more than 30 years experience as a CEO, BPI consultant, and private equity and angel investor. Joe began his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he became the firm's lead consulting Partner in the Consumer Products Supply Chain Practice. He subsequently led two consumer products companies, before co-founding a private equity firm in 2000 investing in consumer products companies. In 2006, Joe co- founded and was the first President of Main Street Venture Fund, LLC, an angel pledge fund investing in regional business opportunities. Joe holds a BS degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA from Xavier University. He has served as a director on a variety of public, private and non-profit boards and has co-authored two books, including Time Based Manufacturing, published by McGraw Hill in 1993.

Lisa is responsible for client services administration. Her experience includes extensive client involvement and project management. She is an expert in synthesizing various project activities into high-quality deliverables. She is a seasoned professional with public and private sector experience across a range of industries. Lisa is also a Program Director and Instructor and is certified in the BEM methodology.
- Dr. Sam ArafehDevelopment Director
Dr. Sam Arafeh has 35+ years’ experience in Enterprise Analysis and Management, architecting business solutions from inception through implementation & operation in the US & abroad. He has consulted with 200+ high profile Institutions and led 1,000+ personnel as a former executive of a US public company. He is an active member of the Association of Egyptian-American Scholars (www.AEAscholars.org) since1973. He earned his B.Sc. Electrical Engineering from Ain-Shams University, Egypt and his Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from Southern Methodist University in 1973.

Jason is responsible for process map production. His experience includes training, project management and client services in the software industry. Jason graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree in Justice Studies and Asian Studies.
- Diana PerryProgram Director
Diana has over 14 years of process improvement experience in major U.S. and international organizations and is certified in the BEM methodology. As Program Director, Diana has implemented business process improvement programs in a diverse range of industries, including mining, utilities, medical, manufacturing, banking, networking, computer manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. She is a contributing editor for the Business Process Mapping Using Visio training course. Diana majored in Business Administration at Wichita State University, Kansas.
- David AmariProgram Director
Dave has approximately 24 years’ process improvement experience in local government, specifically in the police
environment, including ISO certifications for the Phoenix PD and the Houston PD. In 2013, he was named a member of the ANSI/US TAG 176, responsible for the United States’ position regarding the development of ISO quality management standards. He is also serving as the head United States delegate to the international team responsible for developing a new police quality management standard following his participation in the creation of IWA12:2013-Guidelines on the Application of ISO 9001:2008 in Policing Organizations. This set of guidelines was published by the International Association for Standardization in December 2013. He has a bachelor’s degree in management and a master’s degree in public administration.

Michael has achieved rapid certifications to capture upwards of $100 million in incremental revenue, designed productivity solutions for mid-cap to Fortune 1000 technology firms, and has optimized cross functional teams capable of sustainable business results. Michael satisfies profitable customers using minimal resources. He is certified in the BEM methodology.
- Sue MaxwellProgram Director
Sue Maxwell has over 30 years of quality, operations, and customer service management experience across a variety of high tech industries. She has a track record of producing quantitative results while introducing process improvements and customer satisfaction programs through her long career. She has held the role of Chief Quality Officer in several companies, and also managed large, diverse international teams in manufacturing, customer technical support, and sales/business operations as VP of Operations and VP Worldwide Services. She holds a master's degree in Industrial Engineering with a specialty in Human Factors Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also completed the Babson College Technology Managers program in Massachusetts and served as a member of the Aberdeen Research Council's regional advisory council for excellence in customer service. She was an early adopter of our process mapping approach when introducing ISO certification at Excel Switching nearly 20 years ago. Ms. Maxwell is a Certified Perigon Program Director.
- Mark RiedelProgram Director
Mark is a seasoned and diverse professional who identifies complex process improvements and utilizes cost effective solutions to maximize efficiency, improve service levels and quality, and drive increased overall profit. He brings expertise to deliver creative solutions in different industries across national and international global organizations to eliminate redundancy and reduce errors.
Mark has an MBA from the University of Delaware and a BSIE form Clemson University.
- Bruce GreenfieldProgram Director
Bruce Greenfield is a consultant and educator with more than 35 years’ experience. His primary emphasis has been in the area of operations and process improvement, in a variety of industries including manufacturing, education, not-for-profit, government, service, transportation, and retail. Bruce has served as full-time faculty of Capital University School of Management; other teaching positions include Ashland University and BGSU Firelands College. His education includes a Masters in Business Administration from The University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Purdue University.
